European Blue Card

The European Blue Card was introduced in the Netherlands on 19 June 2011 as another approved EU work permit added to the National Highly Skilled Migrant Programme. The EU Blue Card Council Directive makes it easier for highly skilled foreign nationals from outside the EU/ EEA countries and Switzerland to settle and work in other EU member states.

A residence permit from the other EU member state is required. To obtain this residence permit, the employee must comply with the conditions applicable in that member state. The Netherlands residence conditions are stricter for the EU Blue Card holder than for the Highly Skilled Migrant. The employee must have a contract for highly qualified employment for at least one year in the Netherlands and meet the income requirements. The employee must have completed a higher education programme of at least three years. Nuffic has to approve the employee’s diploma.

Advantages: One advantage of the EU Blue Card is that it is easier for an EU Blue Card holder and his family to settle in another EU member state at a later date. Be aware that each member state implements the directive differently.
