When you are spending hours preparing and sending in job applications it can help to have some direction from the experts. We reached out to our great team of recruitment consultants to get tips straight from the source that will help your application catch the eye of recruiters and succeed in your job hunt.
Including your location and phone number on your resume might seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how often it gets overlooked. I frequently encounter many resumes that have no location and sometimes no phone number we can reach out to. These are must-haves and make it much easier for recruiters to figure out if you could be a good fit for a job. It saves time and helps us understand your preferences better. Another valuable tip is to address your work permit situation and express your willingness to relocate for the job.
When reaching out to a recruiter, avoid a generic message like "Hey, I live in Eindhoven, this is my resume, will you keep me in mind for relevant roles?" Instead, try something like "Hi, I saw this job posting and think I'd be a good fit because... Can we chat about it?" A purposeful message demonstrates your commitment and helps us remember you for future opportunities. It's about making a connection beyond just asking for a job.
I receive numerous resumes intended for a particular job that include a cover letter intended for an entirely different position. Personally, it doesn't bother me as I understand the reasons behind it, but it could impact how your motivation is perceived by our clients.
Be deliberate in choosing the jobs you apply for; it creates a more favorable impression with both the recruiter and the hiring manager within client organizations. A helpful tip would be to keep your resume and cover letter separate. Perhaps consider including a generic motivational text about yourself as a candidate, especially if you are open to working in different types of jobs and are not exclusively focused on one particular role.
Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and contact the recruiter managing a specific vacancy you are interested in. While emails are undoubtedly effective, a phone call establishes a personal connection with the recruiter and helps in making a lasting impression for potential future opportunities.
