If you are thinking about looking for a new job in 2021, you better start now. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to look for a new employer. Below we share a number of reasons why you should start looking for a new job as of now.

Less competition

Especially at the end of the year, everyone needs time for themselves and with family. Many people even take a vacation between Christmas and New Year’s. This means that the majority of people do not focus on applying for a new job during this period, which also means that the competition is a lot less than in the other months of the year. Applying directly after the festive season is therefore the perfect timing!

Set up a number of e-mail alerts, so that you receive the latest vacancies and see if an interesting vacancy becomes available. In addition, do your part and search actively for vacancies, send open applications and, if possible, let as many people as possible know that you are looking for a new job.

Don't let the holiday season hold you back. Many HR employees and recruiters are back at work and can easily assess applications and conduct interviews.

New plans and new budgets

Many companies make new plans for the coming calendar year at the end of the year. This may require new staff or a replacement of existing roles. Often new budgets are released from the 1^st of January, which ensures that there is room for new salaries and thus new staff. This would the perfect time to jump at this opportunity.

Meeting new people is easier

When you move to the Netherlands as an expat, you naturally want to make new connections. When you have the possibility to start your new job in January or February, you can consider moving to the Netherlands a little sooner. Perhaps the company you will be working for will organize a new year’s drink, reception or kick-off meeting that you can attend before your start date. This way you can make friends sooner and this can help you integrate faster*.
