Job hunting can feel like a full-time job and figuring out the best moves to make can be confusing, especially in a new labour market. Getting a peek inside the mind of a recruiter can make this process a bit easier. So, let us help with that! In this blog series our experienced recruitment consultants share their top tips to help you succeed in your job search. Learn how to make your application stand out, impress recruiters, and move through the job application process smoothly by following the advice of our experts. This month’s tips are brought to you by our branch manager from our office in Amsterdam, Ilse Bakker.
Honesty is essential throughout the application process. Be open about your background, experiences, and skills - including both your strengths and the areas you are still working to develop. If you have doubts about whether a role is the right fit, don’t hesitate to discuss them with the recruiter. This shows self-awareness and maturity, and it creates space for a meaningful conversation about the possibilities within an organization, or other career options that you may not have considered before.
It always makes a strong impression when a candidate demonstrates curiosity and engagement by asking relevant, well-prepared questions. This includes taking the time to research the company, understand the role, and being genuinely interested in the team, position, and company culture. Taking the time to prepare before an interview will give you confidence and help you to ask good questions that help you understand more about the job AND simultaneously demonstrate your investment in the position. Do not be afraid to let your genuine interest in the company and interviewer shine through during your conversation. Asking smart questions is a great way to show that you are serious about the opportunity and eager to find the right fit.
It is valuable when a candidate is willing to have an open conversation with a client or hiring manager, even if the role does not appear to be a perfect match at first. Sometimes, great opportunities are hidden behind vague titles or incomplete job descriptions. A recruiter who knows you may also see an unexpected match with a company or position, even when it does not appear obvious to you, so avoid making snap judgments and just give the conversation a go. Stay open and take the opportunity to explore whether there is a connection or shared vision to be found. It never hurts to have a conversation and you never know until you try!
Searching for a job can get tedious at times, but remember, a candidate who approaches conversations with a smile, good energy level, and optimism stands out. Positive energy is contagious and often leaves a lasting impression. It also shows that you are engaged in the process, motivated, and someone people will enjoy working with.
While it is totally normal to explore multiple opportunities, going through too many processes at the same time can affect your ability to focus and fully engage in each one. I would advise taking a more focused approach. Being more selective and intentional about which positions you apply for allows you to dedicate more time and energy to the opportunities that have the best potential to be a true fit for you, which often leads to a more successful outcome.
