Job hunting can feel like a full-time job and figuring out the best moves to make can be confusing, especially in a new labour market. Getting a peek inside the mind of a recruiter can make this process a bit easier. So, let us help with that! In this blog series our experienced recruitment consultants share their top tips to help you succeed in your job search. Learn how to make your application stand out, impress recruiters, and move through the job application process smoothly by following the advice of our experts. This month’s tips are brought to you by our branch manager from our office Eindhoven, Mark van der Velden.
No matter your experience, avoid badmouthing your previous employer. It might feel justified, but it often raises concerns about how you handle setbacks or conflict. Instead, shift the focus to what you’ve taken away from that role and how it has helped shape your next step.
If your reason for applying is just “I need a job,” it shows (trust me😝). Take a moment to think about what appeals to you in this specific role or company. You don’t need to recite a perfect answer, but being intentional and genuine makes a real difference.
It’s okay if you don’t meet every single requirement in a job description. That’s rarely expected. If around 70%/80% of the role aligns with your skills or experience, go for it. Sometimes employers list “ideal” qualities that aren’t actually dealbreakers, so don't sell yourself short!
Not enough people do this, and it makes a difference. A quick call to the recruiter or hiring manager with a few smart questions can set you apart. It shows genuine interest and helps us remember you when we’re reviewing applications.
If you are in the middle of other hiring processes, let us know. It’s not a bad thing, it just helps us manage timelines better and shows that you are being open and transparent. No recruiter wants to find out last-minute that their top candidate just accepted another offer.
Recruiters are people too. We’re often juggling multiple roles, timelines, and client needs behind the scenes. A bit of patience and professionalism goes a long way. Treating the process (and the person) with respect usually means you'll get the same in return.
We see templated, AI-written cover letters every day and we can tell. Instead, write something in your own words. Let your personality and motivation shine through. If you pretend to be someone else during the process, it will show in the interview. And honestly, it’s not worth it for you or the company.
It’s not just about getting hired, you are also deciding if a company is right for you. If the role or culture doesn’t fit, chances are it won’t last. You might end up feeling drained, frustrated, or like you’re pretending to be someone you’re not. Be real about what you need to thrive.
