How International Talent Can Help Your Company Grow

Insights from MeerBusiness Amsterdam’s interview with Marjan Stoit, Commercial Manager at Undutchables

In a recent podcast by MeerBusiness Amsterdam, Marjan Stoit, our Commercial Manager, shed light on the powerful role international talent plays in helping Dutch companies grow, especially in a labor market that remains exceptionally tight. With over 26 years of experience in international recruitment, Marjan has seen many labor market cycles come and go, yet one trend remains constant: international professionals are an essential source of skills, innovation, and business resilience in the Netherlands.

Talent Shortage Solutions: Why Looking Beyond Borders Matters

Despite economic fluctuations, employers across the Netherlands, in many different industries continue to struggle with finding qualified candidates. Due to the continuously growing global nature of business many roles require specific language abilities or niche expertise that can be hard to source, especially if you are just looking at the same talent pools.

This is precisely where international professionals make a difference. Luckily, there is still a strong desire among internationals to work in the Netherlands and they continue to actively apply for the great opportunities here. Many have come for studies, partners, or career prospects, while others are recruited directly from abroad. The talent and skills within this group are immense and offer a clear solution in a tight labor market. As Marjan says, “If companies only look nationally, they miss out on highly skilled people who are already here or ready to come.”

Clear Rules, Big Opportunities

The Netherlands has long been an accessible and attractive country for highly skilled migrants. With political adjustments creating some uncertainty and changes when it comes to international focused policies, such as the 30% ruling, sponsorship conditions, and salary thresholds, we are seeing some hesitance in the market when it comes to hiring internationals. However, while working with companies and candidates daily Marjan sees the practicalities of the situation and stresses that these frameworks remain manageable and beneficial. “It’s crucial that the Netherlands stays open to international talent. If we close the door, that talent will go to Germany, Spain, or France instead. Then companies here will not be able to grow.”

For employers, understanding these rules is key: they determine how international employees can join, develop, and remain within an organisation.

Innovation Through Diversity

One of the strongest arguments for hiring international talent is the boost in innovation and problem-solving. Diverse teams bring different cultural perspectives, educational backgrounds, and ways of thinking. “A diverse workforce helps bring fresh ideas and multiple viewpoints into your organisation,” Marjan emphasizes. “It really lifts your business.”

International professionals also increasingly align with new hiring trends, where employers look not only at diplomas but also at skills, potential, and adaptability. Many internationals bring strong technical knowledge, global experience, and high motivation - qualities that contribute directly to growth.

Smooth Integration Starts With Good Support

Hiring international talent does not end with filling a vacancy; onboarding and cultural guidance are essential for long-term success. Undutchables works closely with its clients to support internationals from their first steps in the Netherlands, collaborating with partners and providing webinars on topics such as cultural integration, diversity, and creating an inclusive workforce.

Retention is a major focus: “If companies want internationals to stay and thrive, they need to support them - listen, guide them, and create an environment where they feel valued,” Stoit explains.

Not Just for Large Corporations

Smaller organizations sometimes assume that hiring internationals is only feasible for big companies, but Marjan stresses the opposite. “Small businesses can absolutely benefit from international talent. As long as you are clear about your company’s values, your culture, and what you stand for, internationals can integrate very well.”

A transparent employer brand that authentically reflects inclusion and growth opportunities helps internationals connect quickly with a company’s mission and culture and can help you diversify and expand your team no matter how big your company is.

The Business Case: Growth Through Diversity

International talent offers clear advantages:

  • Filling critical skill and language gaps
  • Bringing diverse perspectives that foster innovation
  • Increasing cultural and linguistic alignment with international clients
  • Enhancing employer branding and competitiveness
  • Strengthening team resilience and long-term retention

As Marjan puts it: “Diversity leads to innovative ideas, and that ultimately means more business. Companies should not wait. There is a pool of talent here, ready to contribute.”

Looking Ahead

For the future, Marjan and the rest of the team at Undutchables remain committed to continuing our mission: helping more internationals find meaningful work in the Netherlands and helping companies grow through diverse, skilled teams. “Don’t wait,” Marjan advises employers. “Explore the international talent pool now. It’s the key to building a strong workforce for the future.”
