Meet the Recruiter - Damian Wijnhoud

Categorie: About Undutchables

We have shared a lot with you about our company, our events, the Netherlands as a country and their traditions. We feel like it is high time you got acquainted with some of our colleagues. This ‘recruiter’ blog will give you more insight into the life of a recruiter, the challenges they face, their most memorable moments and their guilty pleasures. This week we will introduce the Amsterdam recruiter, Damian Wijnhoud. Enjoy!

1. How did you end up in recruitment?

I’m relatively new to recruitment. When I moved here after a period of travelling, I was seeking a role in an international environment that had a personal aspect to the job and wasn’t a typical corporate environment. I have always enjoyed the solution-seeking aspect of my work as well as communication with lots of different people so a position with Undutchables was a great fit.

2. What are the most/least enjoyable aspects of recruiting?

The most enjoyable aspect is finding the perfect match. It’s when a candidate is super thrilled to be offered a position, one that they really wanted, and the company is also relieved that they are wanting to join the company. Everyone’s happy!

The least enjoyable aspect has got to be breaking the bad news to a candidate who really wanted the position. Sometimes things don’t work out and it’s never nice having to tell someone who was really excited about a role that we can’t move forward.

3. What is the biggest challenge of the job?

Juggling twenty-five tasks while having five conversations at the same time can be challenging. Thankfully, we have computers with automated reminders.

Damian

4. What has been your most memorable moment in the job?

Not too long after I started, I received a call from a distressed candidate who was struggling to find a job. They had not been able to work recently and the gap in their resume combined with not being able to speak the language meant their applications weren’t being considered. I was able to give her some tips on re-writing her CV and had a look to see if we had any applicable vacancies. Not too long after that we were able to place her with a company. I happened to answer the phone when she called to say she got the job, and she was incredibly thrilled. That was easily the most memorable moment so far, it’s nice being able to make a positive difference for someone else in what you do.

5. What is the most common mistake you see candidates making, apart from the obvious typos?

Leaving gaps in your CV. I think it’s better to write that you went travelling, or had personal problems, than leave a one or two year hole in your experience history that makes prospective employers wonder what was going on.

6. If you were to have a job outside an office environment, what would be your dream job?

To work on the preservation of wildlife in Africa. That, or a global sandwich review specialist.

7. What's your guilty pleasure?

Eating a kilo of Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream in less than 60 minutes.
