Tip From a Recruiter - Polina Zalivina

Job hunting can feel like a full-time job and figuring out the best moves to make can be confusing, especially in a new labor market. Getting a peek inside the mind of a recruiter can make this process a bit easier. So, let us help with that! In this blog series our experienced recruitment consultants share their top tips to help you succeed in your job search. Learn how to make your application stand out, impress recruiters, and move through the job application process smoothly by following the advice of our experts. This month’s tips are brought to you by our recruitment consultant from Amsterdam, Polina Zalivina.

TIP 1 - Save the job description when you apply

Once a vacancy receives enough applications, a company may take it offline while interviews are underway. By the time you receive an interview invitation, the original job description might no longer be available.

Save a complete copy when you apply, whether as a PDF or a screenshot. You can then revisit the responsibilities, requirements and practical details when preparing for your interview.

TIP 2 - Keep track of your applications

A recruiter’s call can come at an unexpected moment, especially if you have applied for several roles. Having your application details close at hand can help you feel more confident and make the conversation more productive.

Keep a simple list or spreadsheet with details such as:

  • Position title
  • Company name, if known
  • Recruiter’s name and contact details
  • Office location
  • Salary or salary range
  • Expected starting date
  • Application date and current stage

You do not need to remember every application by heart. If a call catches you off guard, it is perfectly fine to ask for a moment to check your notes!

TIP 3 - Stay reachable and check your messages

If you include your phone number on your CV, expect recruiters to call. You do not have to answer every time, but check your voicemail and return relevant calls.

Check your email regularly, including your spam folder. Recruitment can move quickly, so responding promptly helps you avoid missing an opportunity. If you need more time, a brief acknowledgement is helpful.

TIP 4 - Ask for clarification when you need it

Sometimes a question may be unclear, or you might not be sure what the recruiter is asking. Rather than guessing or moving the conversation in a different direction, ask them to clarify or rephrase it.

A simple phrase such as “Could you rephrase that?” or “Do you mean an example from my previous role?” is absolutely fine.

We would much rather take an extra minute to explain a question than have you give an answer that does not reflect your relevant experience. Asking for clarification helps you give a focused answer and allows us to understand you better.

TIP 5 - Communicate when your circumstances change

Plans change, priorities shift and personal circumstances can affect what you need from a job. You may accept another offer, reconsider your salary expectations, need a different starting date or decide that a role is no longer right for you.

Whatever the change, let the people involved know.

I have seen companies adjust their timelines to better accommodate a candidate’s circumstances. That kind of flexibility is only possible when there is an open conversation.
