There seems to be an endless list of new cafés, restaurants, shops and museums to write about and this blog will only add more places to your must-see list. Our colleagues in Amsterdam were more than happy to share some of their favorite places to visit in this vibrant city, so we hope you enjoy this blog with our best tips for discovering Amsterdam and that you get the chance to visit some new places next time you are in town!
Before we dive into the practical tips we want to help you get acquainted with this wonderful area so that you don’t get lost on your way to all of these great sights and food joints. Amsterdam is a bustling international city and you can really get your steps in if you want to see all of it. Just like many larger metropolises, Amsterdam is made up of lots of smaller areas that each have their own vibe and appeal. Lots of companies, from small start ups to big corporates and from the entertainment industry to IT and consumer goods, can be found throughout the whole city. Still there are some specific business areas that are good to point out so that you can work your way confidently around the map.
For a cultural day out Amsterdam is the place to be. The city is a full of famous museums as well as hidden historical gems. Here are some of the highlights that you will not want to miss.
Amsterdam Canal Ring: You have to start by hopping on a canal cruise to experience Amsterdam’s iconic waterways. The UNESCO-listed Canal Ring showcases stunning 17th-century architecture and is a quintessential Amsterdam experience. Plus, besides being enjoyable and informative, it is a great way to see a lot of the city in a short time so you can spot your next destinations and make your sightseeing plan from the water.
NDSM Wharf: While we are on the water theme NDSM Wharf is a great place to check out. Once the largest shipyard in the Netherlands, NDSM Wharf has been transformed into a thriving cultural hotspot over recent decades. Characterized by its gritty industrial architecture, creative community, and vibrant street art, the area is a testament to urban revitalization. Amongst the repurposed shipping containers and converted hangars, you'll find an array of unexpected attractions, from pop-up restaurants to waterside hangouts, art spaces, and a buzzing nightlife scene.
STRAAT Museum: Apparently, art and water tend to go together in Amsterdam. Located in a former shipyard, STRAAT is a must-see museum for street art enthusiasts. This museum displays large, colorful works from artists worldwide, staying true to its name (“STREET”) and showcasing graffiti and urban art.
Museum Het Schip: This museum delves into the Amsterdam School architecture movement, housed in an iconic building designed in that style. It offers fascinating insights into the city’s early 20th-century urban development and the things that make the architecture of Amsterdam so unique.
NEMO Science Museum: A family-friendly destination where science comes to life. The museum features interactive exhibits that explore technology, physics, and human life in an engaging, hands-on way. Plus, its beautiful location and hard-to-miss architecture makes this an iconic stop on your adventure.
Eye Filmmuseum: A visually stunning museum and cinema dedicated to the world of film. You can watch international films, explore exhibits, and enjoy beautiful views of the IJ River from the café.
Tropenmuseum: Near Oosterpark, the Tropenmuseum offers immersive exhibits on human culture and global themes. We would recommend this museum for several reasons. The imposing building has stunning architecture and is also very beautiful on the inside. The museum focuses on humanity with exhibitions that highlight universal human themes, such as mourning, celebrating, praying, or fighting. Plus the museum café, Café de Tropen, has been completely renovated and is getting great reviews, making this the perfect spot for a great cultural experience that you can combine with a tasty lunch.
Nieuwmarkt: A lively and historic square, Nieuwmarkt is known for its charming architecture, cafés, and the iconic De Waag building. Plus, nearby you will find one of Amsterdam's oldest streets, Zeedijk, which offers a blend of history and culture, featuring historic buildings, a great shopping scene, and cozy bars and restaurants. This area is a lovely place to experience the culture and history of Amsterdam along with the locals.
Jordaan: Famous for its narrow streets, independent boutiques, and cozy cafés, the Jordaan is a picturesque neighborhood with a bohemian vibe. It is also home to the Anne Frank House,
The historic site where Anne Frank and her family hid during WWII. Now a museum, it offers a moving insight into her life and legacy, making it one of Amsterdam’s most visited landmarks.
Amsterdam Museum Quarter: If you are looking for the typical Amsterdam experience then this section of the city has to be on your list. Home to the city's top cultural institutions: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, and the modern Moco Museum. It’s a must-visit area for art lovers, where you will be exposed to some of the most famous works of art in the world. Make sure to take in the view from the middle of the square where you will see impressive historical buildings surrounding you on all sides.
Dam Square: Speaking of important places to add to your list, Amsterdam’s central square, surrounded by historical landmarks like the Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk, and the National Monument is one you won’t want to miss. It’s a bustling hub for tourists and locals alike.
Amsterdam is not only known for its history, but is also home to a vibrant entertainment scene. Whether you are into nature, music, movies, or just a fun day out, you will find something for you in Amsterdam.
Het Twiske: When you are ready to get out of the hustle and bustle of downtown Het Twiske is a great place to start. This peaceful nature reserve northwest of Amsterdam offers a unique mix of peat lakes and open spaces, perfect for hiking, cycling, and water activities. Named for the river that feeds it, it is an excellent escape from the city for nature lovers who want to discover the outdoor beauty of the Netherlands.
Cycling through Waterland: While you are outside you should not miss the opportunity to become like the Dutch and cycle of course. Waterland offers one of the most scenic cycling routes near Amsterdam. Pedal through picturesque Dutch 'polder' landscapes and visit quaint villages like Broek in Waterland and Durgerdam. The route can be customized to various lengths for a leisurely or extensive ride.
City Parks: Amsterdam has many little green escapes throughout the city that you will not want to miss whether you are here for a day, or living like a local.
Artis Zoo: Amsterdam’s famous zoo is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and the 5th
oldest zoo in the world! Artis is much more than just a zoo. Visitors can explore a wide variety of animals, learn about space in the planetarium, discover everything about the science of microbes at Micropia, or just enjoy a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens.
Candy Castle: Tired of being outside and looking for a family-friendly adventure? Check out this fun indoor playground housed in a former church, perfect for entertaining kids on rainy days.
Jaap Eden Ice Rink: Another time honored Dutch tradition to try - ice skating! Open from October to March, this ice rink is the place to go for skating enthusiasts, or just if you are looking for a good time and a way to embrace the cold.
Boutiques, markets, and more: For the shoppers among us, Amsterdam will certainly not disappoint. Here are a few spots that the locals say you will definitely want to include in your spree.
Westergas: A cultural hub hosting various music, art, and food events. Westergas also features trendy bars and restaurants within its industrial setting.
Studio/K: This cozy, student-run arthouse cinema offers a unique program of independent films. The venue also houses a café and club, so it is a great place for a casual afternoon coffee, or a full evening out.
Bimhuis: One of Europe’s top jazz venues, hosting around 300 concerts per year, Bimhuis is a must-visit for jazz lovers.
Rialto Cinema: Located on Ceintuurbaan, Rialto is a cozy cinema showcasing independent arthouse films from around the world.
Filmhallen: While we are on the subject of movies, Filmhallen is a popular choice for catching up on the latest blockbusters films. Located in Amsterdam West, the Filmhallen is right next door to the Foodhallen which serves a large variety of food and drinks. So, as you probably guessed, combining the two makes for a great evening of food and fun.
Continuing on the subject of food, after a long day of exploring the historical sites and checking out all the available parks and entertainment, it is time to get some nourishment. In the true Undutchables’ spirit, we love taking culinary adventures into other parts of the world. We have put together some of the best local spots to make sure you get fed well, so we hope you enjoy these these suggestions that are favorites from our team members in Amsterdam.
Cornerstore: Located in the trendy NDSM Wharf, Cornerstore offers a cozy setting with a fusion of international dishes and craft cocktails, making it a great spot for brunch, lunch, dinner, or drinks.

Pllek: Located in Amsterdam North, Pllek is the place to be for beach vibes, outdoor seating, and delicious meals. Enjoy a cocktail while relaxing by the urban beach and get in a summer mood.
Door 74: An exclusive speakeasy bar with expertly crafted cocktails. Reservations are essential for this hidden gem known for its stylish, intimate ambiance.
Ô Mai: This Vietnamese restaurant is close to our office (maybe a nice combination 😉). It is known for its fresh, flavorful dishes and is a favorite spot for locals to grab a quick and delicious meal.
Brasserie Nel: This French-style café that is also near our office is a favorite spot for our team. We even host some of our candidate events here, and it is ideal for networking or casual dining, or just grabbing a coffee or celebratory glass of wine. With its cozy atmosphere and lovely terrace some time spent at Brasserie Nel is never wasted which is why it is one of our longest-standing recommendations that you will definitely want to check out.
