It was a long time coming, but here it finally is, the Undutchables in the City blog is back! This time we are sharing our insider tips for the city of Rotterdam. Undutchables newest office was opened in Rotterdam right in the city center on the Hofplein 20. Rotterdam has gone through an incredible transformation in the last few years thanks to the opening of different cultural hot spots which brought much needed cliental to the city. As we have multiple colleagues living in Rotterdam we asked them to share their favorite spots in the city.
A famous landmark in Rotterdam which should not be overlooked is the Hotel New York located on the Rotterdam harbor. This hotel not only offers beautiful rooms overlooking the harbor but also has a great restaurant and bar for those who are planning a day trip. For those who are looking to test their sea legs the SS Rotterdam is a great option. Located on the Katendrechtsehoofd 25 it is possible for everyone to go onboard, even if they are not hotel guests, the restaurants and café provide a great rest stop during a day out.
Rotterdam has many areas where you can find restaurants and café’s, however there are two which we would like to focus on in this blog. The first one is the Witte de Withstraat, a busy street in the city center. The bars start filling up on Thursday and stay this way until Sunday evening which results in a lively visit every weekend if that is what you are looking for. In addition to this, if you are looking for an area with different restaurants, we would advise you to visit Katendrecht. This up and coming neighborhood hosts the city’s hip and new restaurants. The neighborhood is easy to access from Hotel New York. All you need to do is walk across the Rijnhaven Bridge (better known as the “hoerenloper”) and within 5 minutes you are in Katendrecht. It even has its own food market - the Fenix Food Factory, which is definitely worth a visit.
For shopping we would like to share an interesting shop called Groos in North Rotterdam. Groos is a concept store for Rotterdam fashion, design, art, music, literature, film, delicatessen and lifestyle products. Groos offers some great local products from Rotterdam. Furthermore, while you are visiting Rotterdam, especially in the summer, we would advise visiting one of the parks the city has to offer. We recommend Vreosenpark in Blijdorp or The Park near the Euromast.
If visiting on a rainy day, the Lantaren Venster in Rotterdam is a nice option to spend your afternoon. This cultural venue offers a wide range of entertainment such as art house films, concerts and work shops. A great museum to visit in Rotterdam is the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. This museum offers a wide range of expositions throughout the year.
Rotterdam is one of the Netherlands’s fastest growing cities and there are new restaurants, café’s and cultural venues opening every month. We hope our tips give you some inspiration to visit and please feel free to share your favorite places to visit in Rotterdam!
