International Students Keep Choosing the Netherlands

The latest Nuffic report on Incoming Degree Mobility 2024-25 shows that the Netherlands is still a top destination for global talent. Students from all over the world choose to study in the Netherlands, with Engineering still maintaining a leading spot.

The increase of international students enrolled in Dutch higher education went up by 3% from last year. While this signifies a continued growth in this area, it also shows the beginning of stabilisation in the numbers since the growth percentage is smaller than in recent years.

With the numbers rising less quickly than normal, we need to keep in mind how essential this talent group is for the work environment in the Netherlands. They are tomorrow’s multilingual, multicultural workforce getting ready to boost the Dutch economy, and it is important to ensure that they feel inspired to come and stay.

Key Highlights:

  • More diversity: A 3% rise in non-EEA students is enriching the talent pool with fresh perspectives and global experience. Students from EEA countries still make up a larger part of the international student population, but the diversity is ever-growing.
  • Focus on Master’s: While enrolments in bachelor programs decreased this year, there is a large increase in enrolments in master’s programs. A great portion of this increase is from international students who have already been following a course of study here choosing to stay and continue their education further in the Netherlands.

Why it matters for employers

International graduates often choose to stay after their studies. This strong group of professionals enters the Dutch job market with language skills, cross-cultural know-how, and adaptability. In other words, exactly what companies need in an increasingly global economy. With diverse backgrounds and international mindsets, these graduates can help businesses improve and expand into new markets.

Why it matters for job seekers

Knowing what to expect when you choose to study or work in a new country can be a big help in making the decision. Understanding that the international community in the Netherlands is strong, and continuously growing can help you to feel not alone and give you glimpse into your future opportunities. Plus, not only is the Netherlands a great place to gain an education, it is also a great place to settle and set up your career. Hopefully knowing all of this makes it easier to decide what your next step will be!
