A little Dutch can go a long way 🙂
You have rehearsed your Dutch coffee order. You say it out loud. The reply? “Would you like anything else?” Well, you tried. 😄
On November 26th, Praat Nederlands Day encourages internationals to speak Dutch and invites Dutch speakers to help. Whatever your level, it is a chance to build confidence and connect.
Our team comes from many different countries, with Dutch skills at various levels. We know what it is like to understand a conversation but think of your answer somewhere on the way home.
With English so widely spoken at a high level in the Netherlands, it is easy to rely on it. Still, learning Dutch can help you settle in, join conversations and feel more at home. People often appreciate the effort, even if “gezellig” is doing most of the work.
There are still many English-speaking and multilingual vacancies where Dutch is not required. Your experience and other languages remain valuable!
But Dutch is appearing more often in job requirements, so learning it can broaden your options. Curious? Read our blog, Why the Demand for Dutch Fluency is Increasing in the Dutch Job Market, for insights and practical tips.
The “Praat Nederlands met me” badge, meaning “Speak Dutch with me,” lets people know you want to practice. A small badge with a friendly request: please give my Dutch a chance!
Already speak Dutch? Give learners time to find their words and check before switching to English.
Events and activities are being organized all over the Netherlands to help people practice. Check your local international center’s calendar or explore Leiden International Centre and Holland Expat Center South for more information and event details.
This November 26th, join in "Praat Nederlands Day" and try a few words at work, at the supermarket or over coffee. Or join in one of the many great events being offered throughout the country. Mistakes are welcome, that's how we learn. Zullen we Nederlands praten? 🇳🇱👍
